Carnival to end Gender-based Violence in Batahola

Here are some pictures from Saturday’s Carnival to celebrate the end of Batahola’s violence prevention campaign entitled “Desmarimbando La Violencia” A mixture of the Youth Violence Prevention Group, young people who participated in “Desmarimbando” workshops, Center staff and students, artistic groups invited from Leon, Managua, the neighborhood and the Center, hit the streets with a march around Batahola. We were all left astounded at the number of people who joined in on the march and stayed until the end of the cultural presentation at the park. Even though the campaign has officially come to an end, the Center will continue promoting community activities with an emphasis on gender equality and non-violence. These changes don’t magically appear overnight, or even after a three month campaign, but the hope is that the energy around these themes snowball–opening to more conversation and more opportunities to reach a few more people in the Batahola community.
