Last week was El Güegüense week here at the Center. El Güegüense is a famous folkloric Nicaraguan piece which combines music, dance and theater. The story originates in the colonial ages and depicts a clever indigenous man who tricks the Spanish authorities. The festivities included a workshop for local students on the history of El Güegüense, a youth painting contest, and the actual performance of the work by the Center’s very own New Dawn Dance Group and Margarita Navarro Orchestra. The night was a wonderful display of Nicaraguan culture and art enjoyed by the community.
