Photo of the Day

This mural, the most recent one painted at the Center (and almost completed I’m told) is called Alegremía. It was painted by art-teacher Gerardo Hernández Áreas, along with some of his painting students.

Medicine uses the term “emia” to indicate the values of chemical substances that are measured in blood (for example anemia or cholesterolemia). Thus, the “A’s” in alegremía represent the basic life-elements we need: aire (air), agua (water), alimento (food), arte (art), amor (love), albergue (housing), and aprendizaje (learning).

Take a look and see if you can find the symbols painted in the mural.

  1. I have seen this in varies stagies, the finished work is wonderful. Please tell Gerardo how much I love it and can not wait to see it in person!!

  2. Andrea, The word Alegremia brought to mind also ‘Joy’ (Alegria) in the blessings of life filled with Love, learning etc. (and I suspect the artist also likes his name Areas reflected in the A of his work) We should probably stop over reading meaning in this! like alegria for your middle name too. Love from Gramps.

    • Thanks Gramps for your reflection. Ha! I didn’t actually know the name of this mural until I asked about it recently, and now that I know what it represents, it means more to me 🙂 Did Grandma see it too? love, andijoy
