Yesterday on March 8th, in celebration of International Women’s Day, women from all over Nicaragua marched together to demand freedom from violence. A number of people from the Cultural Center of Batahola Norte (CCBN) also joined in protest.
The CCBN places a large emphasis on helping women learn about their rights, demand justice, become educated, and grow in self-esteem. These values are taught in each of the classes at the Center, as well as in workshops offered periodically, and in the Center’s violence-prevention outreach project in the neighborhood Jorge Dimitrov.
While stories of women speaking out against violence give our work hope, there still exists the reality of violence against women in Nicaragua. According to the Nicaraguan newspaper, La Prensa, from January to February 2012, there were 18 women murdered in domestic-violence situations.
Here is an informative, short article that describes the current situation in Nicaragua: “Women Demand Justice.”
