These are some views of a small community outside of Estelí, called La Garnacha. The Little Brothers of Jesus started this community back in the 80’s. They practice organic farming techniques, raise cows and goats, and also have vermiculture. They are making incredibly rich compost, which is sold like gold. Visitors who pass through must taste their Swiss cheese–a surprising treat to find in Nicaragua. If you are interested in making a trip or staying in a cabin here, take a look at their website (in Spanish only), or this PDF brochure in English.
Sam and I, who are volunteers supported through the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), just got back from four days of volunteer retreat at La Garnacha, along with other VMM volunteers from Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala. We enjoyed great cheese, spiritual exercises, and a long hike up to a mountain with views of the Pacific ocean, Honduras, and El Salvador!
