The great cathedral in León, Nicaragua. The original plans for construction were meant to be sent to Panama, but something went wrong, and construction got started here in León. Just as well for Nicaragua! Also known as La Basílica Catedral de la Asunción de León, it was built between 1747 and 1814, in the Baroque Colonial style. It has the privilege of being the largest cathedral in Central America.

  1. I believe there was another similar miscommunication related to Costa Rica. I don’t remember the details but now CR has something that was supposed to go to somewhere in South America.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised! I find it fascinating the stories of how cathedrals were constructed. They remain tangible reminders of the past, both the beauty of that culture and time, but also I recognize the terrible injustices that often occurred in the construction (slave-labor, unsafe conditions, or mistreatment of indigenous workers…). Two sides of the coin.
